Entering into pregnancy brings forth a multitude of emotions and challenges, and for many, the dreaded glucose tolerance test looms large on the horizon. As someone who meticulously tracked my glucose levels for nearly a year before this, I understand the anxiety that accompanies the anticipation of this test. However, armed with preparation and a proactive mindset, I navigated through this hurdle with a sense of purpose and determination.
Why I wore a CGM During My Pregnancy
One of the decisions I made to ease my apprehension was to wear a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) leading up to and on the day of the test. This small yet powerful device provided me with invaluable real-time data about my glucose levels, offering a reassuring glimpse into my body’s response. Seeing my levels remain stable was a comforting affirmation that I was on the right track.
What to Eat Before the Glucose Tolerance Test
Preparing myself physically was equally crucial. I curated a breakfast that I knew would help maintain stable blood sugar levels: over easy eggs, Ezekiel toast with avocado, and cottage cheese—a nourishing combination of healthy fats, carbs, and protein. This deliberate choice laid a solid foundation for my body to maintain healthy glucose levels.
I of course was nervous when they called my name to the room. Equally as stressful, I had two lab assistants staring at me while I drank the wonderful orange beverage. I checked my levels app about 30 minutes later and I had spiked right up to 143mg/dL and then straight back down just as my levels should respond to the test! I was so relieved to see the data right away knowing that “I passed”
What I learned from the Glucose Tolerance Test
Reflecting on this experience and pregnancy in general, I’ve realized we can’t control EVERYTHING. But there are things we can do to take control of our health. What we eating, timing and more. At the end of the day, we can prevent everything from happening during pregnancy, but there are some things I did that I would recommend to others as well.

Not all healthy foods are created equal. Some seemingly innocent choices can send our glucose levels soaring into the diabetic range, leaving us grappling with symptoms like fatigue, irritability, brain fog and feeling hangry.
