Navigating stress and anxiety during pregnancy can be incredibly challenging, especially when combined with concerns about managing glucose levels. Recently, I had an experience that highlighted just how crucial it is to keep both our minds and bodies balanced.
I shared how my glucose responded to the 1-hour glucose tolerance test – it did well!
My levels were back to normal after 2 hours.
HOWEVER, I had an insanely stressful workday with lots of meetings and a bit of travel afterward. I didn’t plan ahead and ended up stopping at a gas station to grab a grilled cheese and an RX bar.
Strange choice, right? But it sounded good at the time. Unfortunately, this led to very dysregulated levels for the rest of the day. The stress of the test and work really didn’t set me up for success long-term. This is why our food choices matter, but also why keeping our stress in check and planning ahead is so important. I put so much time and effort into making sure that test went smoothly that I forgot about the rest of the day.
My experience showed me that poor food choices, especially when stressed or unprepared, can lead to dysregulated glucose levels. Planning ahead and having healthy snacks on hand can make a big difference in how you feel throughout the day.
Stress plays a huge role in how our bodies manage blood sugar. High stress levels can cause spikes in glucose, making it harder to maintain balance. That’s why managing stress through techniques like mindfulness, exercise, and adequate sleep is just as important as watching what you eat.
If you’re curious to learn the exact meal I had before the test, the steps I took to feel at ease, and how to effectively monitor your glucose levels, I’ve compiled all this information into a handy guide.
